2021 Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code
Every CAD drawing set we produce for Virginia projects is built around the 2021 Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, which took effect January 18, 2024 and became mandatory for all permit applications statewide as of January 18, 2025. It is based on the 2021 International Code Council family and the 2020 National Electrical Code, and it governs everything from structural framing plans to electrical and plumbing drafting submitted to local building departments from Arlington to Virginia Beach.
The next code cycle, based on the 2024 I-Codes, is still in development - a Notice of Intended Regulatory Action was approved in March 2025 and the public comment period closed in October 2025 - but it has not yet been adopted or taken effect. We track these cycles closely and always recommend confirming current requirements with your local Authority Having Jurisdiction before final submittal.
