Steel Detailing Services · Alabama

Every ton of Alabama steel makes the same trip - mill, model, member, mount.

Drafting Buddies details the steel that carries that trip: AISC-based shop drawings, erection drawings, and connection detailing for fabricators, contractors, and engineers building across Alabama - from Birmingham's mills to Huntsville's data-center campuses and Mobile's Gulf Coast yards.

Fabrication-Ready Output

Alabama makes steel and builds with it in the same breath

From the electric-arc mills along the Gulf Coast to the fabrication yards feeding Huntsville's aerospace corridor and Birmingham's data-center boom, structural steel in this state moves fast and gets inspected hard. Drafting Buddies is a CAD drafting and BIM modeling company, founded in Austin, Texas in 2014, and our steel detailing team exists to keep that pipeline moving: shop drawings a fabricator can cut from without a second look, erection drawings a foreman can hand to the crew without a pre-lift huddle, and connection details that survive the engineer of record's review the first time.

We built this practice around a simple standard: every piece mark we release is checked against AISC 360, AISC 303, and AWS D1.1 before it leaves our desk - regardless of which building code edition the project's home jurisdiction happens to be running, which in Alabama can vary from one county line to the next. That discipline is what lets fabricators in Birmingham, contractors in Huntsville, and engineers coordinating a Mobile port project all hand us the same kind of drawing set and get back the same kind of accuracy.

Whether you need a full detailing package for a warehouse in the Shoals or overflow capacity for a busy fabrication shop in the Wiregrass, we work inside your standards, your software, and your schedule - not the other way around. Statewide coverage is listed on our Alabama drafting services page.

Built for Alabama's code landscape

  • No unified statewide commercial code - we confirm local jurisdiction amendments before release.

  • National steel standards (AISC 360 / 303, AWS D1.1) applied consistently regardless of local IBC edition.

  • Gulf Coast counties detailed to elevated ASCE 7 wind criteria; interior counties to standard risk category loads.

  • Coordinated with the engineer of record on any detailer-designed connection.

PM-01 · Shop Drawings

Structural Steel Shop Drawings Alabama

Complete structural steel shop drawings built to the AISC 303 Code of Standard Practice, covering beams, columns, girders, and bracing for fabrication-ready release. Every piece mark is dimensioned, labeled, and cross-referenced against the engineer of record's design drawings before it reaches your shop floor. We flag connection conflicts, bolt-pattern clashes, and missing design information early, so RFIs stay low and your fabricators start cutting with confidence instead of guessing at intent.

PM-02 · Erection

Steel Erection Drawings & Sequencing Alabama

Erection drawings and plans that tell your ironworkers exactly what goes up, in what order, and how it connects, with piece marks matched precisely to the shop drawing set. We sequence columns, beams, and bracing by lift stage, mark field bolts versus shop bolts, and note crane-critical picks. Clear erection sets reduce field rework, keep crews moving safely, and shorten the gap between steel delivery and topping out on Alabama job sites.

PM-03 · Connections

Steel Connection Detailing (Bolted & Welded) Alabama

Engineered and detailer-designed connections for moment, shear, and brace conditions, built around AISC 360 and AWS D1.1 requirements. We detail bolted shear tabs, welded moment plates, gusset plates, and higher-risk connections with full weld symbols and bolt callouts. Every connection is checked against the specified load path and the building's risk category before release, so fabricators and inspectors see a drawing that matches the structural engineering intent exactly.

PM-04 · Base / Anchor

Base Plate & Anchor Bolt Detailing Alabama

Base plate and anchor bolt layouts coordinated tightly with the foundation and civil drawings so bolts land where the concrete crew actually poured them. We detail plate thickness, weld sizing, grout space, and bolt projection for column bases, equipment supports, and embedded connections. Getting this piece right the first time avoids the costly field fix of re-drilling or field-welding a base plate that doesn't match the anchor bolt pattern already cast in place.

PM-05 · Misc. Steel

Miscellaneous Steel Detailing Alabama

Stairs, guardrails, handrails, ladders, platforms, and canopy steel detailed to match your project's architectural and life-safety requirements. This is the steel that gets built last and inspected hardest, so we detail tread pans, stringer connections, rail post spacing, and platform framing to code-compliant tolerances. Miscellaneous steel is released as a coordinated package so your fabricator can price and build stairs and rails alongside the main structural steel.

PM-06 · Tekla

Tekla Structures Steel Detailing Alabama

Full 3D steel models built in Tekla Structures, generating shop drawings, erection drawings, NC/DSTV files, and material lists straight from a single intelligent model. Modeling connections in 3D catches clashes between steel, embeds, and adjacent trades before fabrication instead of on the job site. If your fabricator runs Tekla or needs DSTV output for CNC equipment, we deliver a model built to their workflow, not just a set of 2D sheets.

PM-07 · SDS/2

SDS/2 Steel Detailing Alabama

Structural steel detailing produced in SDS/2 for fabricators and detailers who work in that environment, including automated connection design, shop drawings, erection sets, and NC file output. We match your existing SDS/2 project standards, macros, and drawing templates so files drop straight into your production workflow without a format translation step or a second round of setup on your end.

PM-08 · BIM / Clash

BIM Steel Modeling & Clash Coordination Alabama

Steel models built to LOD 300-400 and coordinated against architectural, MEP, and civil models before fabrication begins. We run clash detection between structural steel and ductwork, piping, and embeds, documenting conflicts with markup so the design team resolves them on screen instead of in the field. Coordinated steel models keep your general contractor's federated model clean and your steel package free of surprise conflicts at erection.

PM-09 · 3D Modeling

3D Structural Steel Modeling Alabama

Construction-accurate 3D models of structural steel framing, used for design review, owner presentations, and constructability studies before drawings are released. Models show true member sizes, connection geometry, and clearances, giving engineers and contractors a way to walk through the frame and catch layout issues while changes are still cheap to make, well before steel is ordered from an Alabama mill.

PM-10 · PEB

Pre-Engineered Metal Building (PEB) Detailing Alabama

Detailing for pre-engineered metal building systems, including primary rigid frames, secondary framing, girts, purlins, and bracing, coordinated with the building manufacturer's design output. We produce erection drawings, anchor bolt plans, and material lists that match the manufacturer's connection standards, helping general contractors and erectors move straight from steel delivery to erection without re-verifying dimensions in the field.

PM-11 · Fabrication

Steel Fabrication Drawings & Material Takeoffs Alabama

Fabrication-ready drawings paired with accurate bills of material and takeoffs, so your shop can order material, plan cut lists, and quote the job from one reliable package. We list piece marks, quantities, grades, and weights per member, cross-checked against the shop drawing set, reducing the back-and-forth between estimating, purchasing, and the drafting table on tight-schedule Alabama projects.

PM-12 · Outsourcing

Steel Detailing Outsourcing for Fabricators & Contractors Alabama

An extension of your detailing department for fabricators, subcontractors, and general contractors who need overflow capacity without hiring. We work inside your existing standards, software, and drawing templates, taking on full projects or specific packages during busy stretches. You keep the client relationship and final sign-off; we handle the drafting hours in the background, scaled up or down as your workload changes. See our full services for related drafting support.

Please Note - Drafting Buddies provides steel detailing, drafting, and modeling services. We coordinate closely with your engineer of record and do not provide licensed structural engineering or connection design services.

Building Codes & Standards

Alabama's code landscape, and where structural steel stands apart from it

Layer · Governing standard

LayerGoverning standard
State-owned / state-funded buildingsDCM minimum - 2021 IBC family, amended with select 2024 IBC provisions since Mar. 2025
Private commercial constructionLocal option - set by each city or county; some unincorporated areas have no code enforcement
Residential (statewide)2015 IRC base since 2011; enforcement authority moved to the AL Home Builders Licensure Board, Oct. 2024
Electrical (statewide minimum)2020 NEC since Jul. 2023 - some jurisdictions (e.g. Shelby Co.) already on 2024 IBC / 2026 NEC
Structural steel (national, applied statewide)AISC 360, AISC 303, AWS D1.1 - unaffected by local IBC edition
Wind & seismic loadingASCE 7 - elevated hurricane-prone wind criteria in Mobile and Baldwin counties

Alabama is one of the few states with no single unified statewide commercial building code. The Department of Construction Management sets a minimum standard, but it only governs state-owned and state-funded projects - schools, state facilities, and buildings under the State Fire Marshal's licensing authority. Everything else is a local decision, and a handful of rural or unincorporated counties enforce no commercial code at all.

That patchwork changes which IBC edition a set of design drawings is checked against - but it doesn't change the standards that govern the steel itself. AISC 360, AISC 303, and AWS D1.1 apply the same way whether a project sits in Jefferson County or an unincorporated stretch of the Black Belt, and that's the baseline every piece mark we release is checked against.

We confirm the specific local amendments for your project's jurisdiction before final release, since "Alabama code" genuinely depends on which city or county line the site falls inside.

Alabama's Steel Pipeline

From the mill to the job site

Alabama makes a lot of the steel it builds with. ArcelorMittal Calvert, in Mobile County, is one of the most modern integrated flat-rolled steel mills in North America. SSAB Americas' Axis plant runs on electric arc furnace technology and recycles roughly 1.6 million tons of scrap metal a year into structural and plate steel, while Outokumpu's nearby Calvert facility supplies stainless. U.S. Steel's Fairfield Tubular Operations, just outside Birmingham, is putting $75 million into a new Premium Thread Line - an investment announced in November 2025 alongside partner Nippon Steel - and Nucor runs multiple Alabama operations feeding joists, decking, and tubular product into the same supply chain.

That steel is going into a construction pipeline that needs matching detailing capacity: Meta's Huntsville and Montgomery data-center campuses, the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Airbus's Mobile A320/A220 final assembly line - the only Airbus aircraft plant in the United States - and the sustained base construction supporting Redstone Arsenal and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center. Every one of those projects runs on structural steel that has to be detailed, fabricated, and erected against a tight schedule, which is the exact work this page is about.
