Why This Page Exists

Iron built Birmingham. Precision detailing keeps building it.

Alabama is one of the few places on earth where iron ore, coal, and limestone were found close enough together to build an entire steel industry - it's the reason Birmingham earned the name "The Magic City" and why the 56-foot cast-iron statue of Vulcan, the Roman god of the forge, still stands watch over the skyline today. That same fabrication culture carried the state forward: Huntsville became "Rocket City" building the engines that sent Apollo to the moon, Mobile now assembles Airbus jetliners on the Gulf Coast, and Montgomery and Huntsville host automotive plants producing hundreds of thousands of vehicles a year. Every one of those projects - historic and current - depends on shop drawings that translate an engineer's design intent into something a fabricator can cut, bend, weld, and erect without guesswork.

Drafting Buddies builds that translation layer for contractors, fabricators, engineers, and architects working anywhere in Alabama. Our detailers produce structural steel, architectural, MEP, precast, and fabrication shop drawings that hold up to AISC and AWS scrutiny and move through submittal review without repeated redlines - whether the project sits inside Birmingham's mill district, on a Huntsville data-center pad, or in a rural county with no local building department at all. We keep pace with Alabama's genuinely uneven code landscape (more on that below) so your drawings reflect the actual authority having jurisdiction, not a generic national default. Statewide coverage is listed on our Alabama drafting services page.

POUR 01 · Structural

Structural Steel Shop Drawings Alabama

Complete steel detailing packages covering erection drawings, connection details, and piece-mark fabrication sheets for beams, columns, joists, and miscellaneous steel. We build to AISC 360 and AWS D1.1 conventions, coordinate bolt and weld callouts with the engineer of record, and produce material lists ready for mill order. Used for everything from Birmingham mid-rise cores to Huntsville industrial frames, our steel drawings are built in Tekla Structures or SDS/2 and exported to the format your fabricator's shop already runs on, cutting rework at the saw and press-brake stage.

AISC / AWS D1.1

POUR 02 · Architectural

Architectural Shop Drawings Alabama

Detailed architectural shop drawings for millwork, interior finishes, custom trim, and building envelope elements that translate design-intent drawings into fabrication-ready sheets. We coordinate reflected ceiling details, wall sections, and finish schedules so installers aren't left interpreting intent on site. Drawings are cross-checked against the architect's construction set for dimensional accuracy before release, and every sheet carries revision tracking so field changes stay documented through submittal, shop fabrication, and final installation walkthroughs.

AIA-aligned sheet sets

POUR 03 · MEP

MEP Shop Drawings Alabama

Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing shop drawings covering ductwork, piping, conduit routing, and fire protection layouts, coordinated across trades before they reach the field. We flag clashes between disciplines during drafting rather than after fabrication, produce spool and hanger details subcontractors can build from directly, and align every sheet with the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing codes your Alabama jurisdiction actually enforces - whether that's a state-owned facility under DCM review or a privately permitted commercial build.

Mechanical / Electrical / Plumbing / Fire

POUR 04 · Concrete

Precast & Rebar Shop Drawings Alabama

Precast concrete and reinforcing steel shop drawings covering panel elevations, connection hardware, embed layouts, and rebar placement schedules for slabs, walls, and foundations. Bar bending schedules follow ACI 318 detailing conventions and are formatted for direct use by rebar shops and precast plants. We coordinate lifting-point and bracing details with the structural engineer so erection sequencing is built into the drawing set rather than solved on site, which matters on Alabama's fast-moving industrial and data-center pours.

ACI 318 detailing

POUR 05 · Millwork

Millwork & Cabinetry Shop Drawings Alabama

Custom millwork and cabinetry shop drawings for reception desks, nurses' stations, retail fixtures, and built-in casework, dimensioned down to hardware and joinery detail. Drawings include material and finish call-outs, section cuts through cabinetry runs, and elevation views coordinated with electrical and plumbing rough-ins so cutouts land correctly the first time. Whether the shop is running CNC or hand-built joinery, our sheets are formatted to move straight from approval to the cutting floor without a second markup pass.

Fabrication-ready joinery detail

POUR 06 · Glazing

Curtain Wall, Storefront & Glazing Shop Drawings Alabama

Aluminum storefront, curtain wall, and glazing shop drawings covering mullion layouts, anchor details, weep and drainage paths, and glass unit schedules for commercial and mixed-use facades. We detail thermal breaks and structural silicone joints to the system manufacturer's approved details, coordinate wind-load anchorage with the structural set, and produce elevation and section sheets glazing contractors can submit for approval without additional engineering back-and-forth on Gulf Coast wind-exposure projects.

AAMA / manufacturer system details

POUR 07 · Openings

Doors, Windows & Railing Shop Drawings Alabama

Door, window, hardware, stair, and handrail shop drawings that carry every opening from schedule to fabrication, including frame types, hardware sets, and fire-rating labels. Stair and railing packages cover stringer layouts, baluster spacing, and guard-height compliance checked against IBC and Alabama Residential Building Code thresholds where applicable. Every schedule cross-references room and door numbers back to the architectural set, so field crews and inspectors are working from one consistent numbering system on commercial and residential projects alike.

Schedule-to-fabrication accuracy

POUR 08 · Fabrication

Fabrication & Manufacturing Shop Drawings Alabama

General fabrication and manufacturing drawings for custom metalwork, equipment supports, platforms, and one-off assemblies that don't fit a standard trade category. We work directly from sketches, field measurements, or reverse-engineered parts when no source drawing exists, producing dimensioned fabrication sheets a shop can quote and cut from immediately. This service is popular with Alabama fabricators and manufacturers supplying the state's automotive and aerospace supply chains, where turnaround speed often matters as much as precision.

Custom / one-off assemblies

POUR 09 · BIM

BIM & Revit Coordination for Shop Drawings Alabama

Shop drawings generated from coordinated Revit and Navisworks models, so structural, architectural, and MEP disciplines are clash-checked before any sheet is issued for fabrication. We build to LOD 300-400 for fabrication-level detail, extract shop drawings directly from the federated model to keep drawings and model in sync, and deliver clash-detection reports alongside the drawing set. This BIM service suits design-build teams and general contractors running BIM execution plans on Alabama's data-center and manufacturing projects.

LOD 300-400 · Revit / Navisworks

POUR 10 · Review

Shop Drawing Review, Checking & Coordination Alabama

Independent shop drawing review and redline services for general contractors and architects who need drawings checked against the contract documents before submittal. We compare dimensions, specifications, and code references line by line, mark up discrepancies with clear callouts, and return a coordinated response so review cycles move faster. This service also covers multi-trade coordination, resolving conflicts between structural, architectural, and MEP shop drawings before they reach the field on complex Alabama commercial projects.

QC redlines & markups

POUR 11 · Submittals

As-Built & Permit-Ready Submittal Drawings Alabama

As-built drawings and permit-ready submittal packages that document what was actually built, formatted to meet the requirements of the Alabama jurisdiction reviewing the permit. We update construction sets from field markups and RFIs, verify dimensions against site conditions, and assemble submittal packages with the cover sheets, schedules, and stamps a plan reviewer expects. This service is used heavily by contractors closing out projects in jurisdictions with active building departments, including Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery.

Permit & closeout documentation

POUR 12 · Outsourcing

Shop Drawing Outsourcing for Contractors & Fabricators Alabama

Ongoing shop drawing outsourcing for general contractors, subcontractors, and fabrication shops who need overflow detailing capacity without hiring in-house drafters. We plug into your existing workflow, standards, and title-block templates, take on individual projects or standing monthly volume, and scale up or down as your Alabama project pipeline shifts. Pricing is quoted per drawing or per project, with rush turnaround available for submittal deadlines that can't move.

Why Choose Us

What Alabama contractors and fabricators actually get from working with us

Six reasons Alabama GCs, fabricators, and design teams route their shop drawings through Drafting Buddies.

  • 01

    Trade-specific detailers, not generalists

Steel, MEP, architectural, and precast drawings are each handled by detailers who specialize in that discipline, so you're not getting a structural drafter's guess at a duct routing problem.

  • 02

Built for the AHJ that's actually reviewing it

We track which jurisdictions in Alabama enforce which code edition - state DCM buildings, local municipal departments, or unenforced counties - and format drawings accordingly.

  • 03

    Software-agnostic delivery

Drawings are delivered in the CAD or BIM format your fabricator, architect, or GC already uses, so files drop into existing workflows without a conversion step.

  • 04

    Fast, honest turnaround

Most first drafts return within 24-48 hours depending on scope. If a deadline genuinely can't be met, you hear that up front - not after the date has passed.

  • 05

    U.S.-based project communication

You work with a single point of contact who understands the project from kickoff through final revision, with clear status updates at every submittal stage.

  • 06

    A+ BBB-rated, since 2014

Alabama Code & Compliance

Alabama doesn't run one building code - your drawings shouldn't assume it does

Alabama has no single, universally enforced commercial building code. We confirm the authority having jurisdiction before drafting begins.

The Alabama Building Commission's Division of Construction Management (DCM) adopts a state minimum standard - currently the 2021 International Building Code family, amended in March 2025 with select 2024 IBC provisions - but DCM's authority is limited to state-owned and state-funded buildings, public and certain private schools, and hotel/motel and movie-theater occupancies. Private commercial construction outside those categories falls to local jurisdictions, and enforcement varies widely: some cities and counties actively review plans under a recent code edition, while many rural and unincorporated areas maintain no building department and no code enforcement at all.

  • Residential construction

Residential construction has a statewide code (currently based on the 2015 IRC), with adoption authority moved to the Alabama Home Builders Licensure Board in October 2024 under Act 2024-443. Enforcement is still local-option.

  • Electrical work

Electrical work follows the 2020 National Electrical Code as the state minimum, effective July 1, 2023 - though individual jurisdictions can and do move to newer editions locally.

  • Major metros

Major metros with active building departments - Birmingham, Huntsville, Mobile, and Montgomery among them - typically enforce a current IBC-family edition and layer in local amendments; Shelby County, for example, has adopted the 2024 IBC family alongside the 2026 NEC.

We confirm the authority having jurisdiction for every project before drafting begins, so structural, MEP, and life-safety details are built against the code edition your reviewer will actually check them against - not a generic statewide assumption.

Market & Industry Context

From the Magic City's furnaces to Rocket City's launch pads

Alabama's construction economy runs on the same heavy-industry backbone that built its reputation: the state has roughly $12.9 billion in projects under active construction, led by data-center campuses, automotive plants, and aerospace facilities that all depend on precise fabrication detailing.

Meta is expanding its Huntsville data-center campus toward nearly 3.5 million square feet while building a new 715,000-square-foot facility on a 1,540-acre site in Montgomery. Mazda Toyota Manufacturing's roughly $2.3 billion plant near Huntsville builds up to 300,000 vehicles a year across more than 2,000 acres. Airbus continues A320 and A220 final assembly at its only U.S. manufacturing facility in Mobile, and Fort Rucker anchors the state's military aviation training footprint. Birmingham's steel legacy - the only place in the world where iron ore, coal, and limestone converged in one location - still runs through the fabrication shops that supply these projects today.

Common questions about shop drawings in Alabama

FAQ

It depends on who owns the project and where it sits. State-owned or state-funded buildings, public and certain private schools, and hotel/motel and theater occupancies fall under the Alabama DCM's state code. Private commercial construction elsewhere depends on the local jurisdiction: some cities enforce a current IBC edition, and some areas - particularly rural and unincorporated counties - enforce no formal building code at all. We confirm the authority having jurisdiction before drafting starts.
