Building Codes
North Carolina enforces a single statewide code through its Building Code Council. The 2024 code's effective date has been delayed to no earlier than July 2026 under the Disaster Recovery Act of 2025. We confirm whether the 2018 default or an owner-elected 2024 edition governs before finalizing a package, preventing review delays caused by the wrong code year.
The 2018 North Carolina State Building Code remains the enforced statewide standard. The 2024 edition may be used where the owner elects early adoption as an approved alternative method.
The currently enforced suite includes the Building, Residential, Fire, Mechanical, Plumbing and Fuel Gas Codes, while the 2023 North Carolina Electrical Code is already in effect.
